It is now half-way through August and my reading year (September to the following August) is just about over. I won’t be adding any more books to the 2018 long list for a “The Very Best!” Book Awards, so the list will remain unchanged and I will be announcing the winners in mid-September. There will be three categories:
- Best Fiction (includes Short Fiction as well)
- Best Non-Fiction
- Best First Book (Fiction or Non-Fiction)
As for the upcoming year, I have a small stack that’s growing as the Fall 2018 releases come trickling in. There are also some 2018 books here that I never got around to reading yet.
A couple of these have already received some awards, such as Peter Clair’s Taapoategl & Pallet and Michael Kaan’s The Water Beetles. I am also anxious to read Jeanette Lynes’ new book too. I hope 2018 was a good year for you when it came to books. It’s a good thing I keep
Enjoy the rest of your summer, and keep reading, it’s good for the brain!

James M. Fisher is the Founding Editor of The Miramichi Reader. He began TMR in 2015, realizing that there was a genuine need for more book reviews of Canadian literature. It has since become Canada’s best-regarded source for the finest in new literary releases. James has been interviewed about TMR on CBC Radio and other media sites. He works as a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Technologist and lives in Miramichi, New Brunswick with his wife Diane, their tabby cat Eddie, and Buster the Red Merle Border Collie.
I’m curious to hear more about Brenda Thompson’s book!
Yes! I didn’t know poorhouses existed in Canada until I saw this book!
My rug-hooking friend, Laura Kenney, has become interested in the poor houses, since doing her work on Maud Lewis. Maud’s husband, Everett Lewis, worked for a while at the poor house near their house in Digby County.
I recall seeing something about that as I was flipping through the book.
