The Ice Shack by Christian Quesnel, Jocelyne Thomas, Katia Canciani

This French to English translation is a tale of adventure that shares the traditional skill of ice fishing with a generation that may not be so familiar with it anymore.

Alphonse

The Ice Shack’s comedic tale follows Alphonse, who owns the most beautiful ice-fishing shack on the whole coast, but can’t seem to catch a thing—not even an old tire, a sock, or a worn-out pair of underpants! But, somehow, someway, Alphonse is determined to win the Best Fisherman Contest. That is, until poor Alphonse falls asleep waiting for the fish to bite, and stays asleep until Spring, and his beautiful shack, with Alphonse inside, drifts off on an ice floe. It’s a tale so big, maybe even so outlandish, only a fisherperson could tell it. And it’s great fun to share with the family.

Originally published as La Cabane by New Brunswick-based publisher Bouton d’or Acadie, the story has been called “a beautiful story of fishing… poetry, sky, and whales” by The Quebec Association of Elementary Teachers. Both The Ice Shack and La Cabane are featured in Atlantic Books Today’s Holiday Gift Guide. Earlier this year, The Ice Shack was also featured in Quill & Quire’s Fall Preview.

CHRISTIAN QUESNEL lives in Saint-Andre-Avellin, Quebec, and is an author and illustrator of comics, graphic novels, and children’s books. He’s illustrated several books and albums with Bouton d’or Acadie, and The Ice Shack is his fifth big fish!

Translator JOCELYN THOMAS is an editor, folklorist, and avid reader. Passionate about words, stories, culture, and history since childhood, she is an unrepentant bibliophile and fervent enthusiast of words and language.

KATIA CANCIANI lives in Gatineau, Quebec, and has published 36 books for children. She spends her time flying planes and meeting kids in schools.
