New Brunswick’s Goose Lane Editions Named Benetech Global Certified Accessible™ Publisher

(From a Goose Lane Press Release)

FREDERICTON, N.B. September 1, 2021Goose Lane Editions, Canada’s oldest independent
publisher, has become a Benetech Global Certified Accessible™ (GCA) publisher. Starting with
this fall’s catalogue, all eBooks published by Goose Lane Editions will meet the internationally
recognized standard for accessibility.
All of Goose Lane Editions’ upcoming digital publications will be equipped with the latest
enhanced accessibility features. In addition to text-to-speech recognition, the Benetech
certification ensures that image descriptions, language tagging, and emphasis will allow more
readers than ever to enjoy Goose Lane Editions’ extensive collection of fiction and non-fiction
books.

“Goose Lane has always been committed to working towards making our
eBooks accessible. Working with Benetech testers has allowed us to
implement the highest standards in eBook accessibility and ensure our eBooks
are born accessible. Modern eBook technology allows screen readers to read
and describe the entire book, from descriptions of images to correctly
pronouncing foreign language text.”

— Alan Sheppard, Production Editor at Goose Lane Editions

CNIB estimates more than three million Canadians have a print disability, making it difficult, if
not impossible, to read print. Thanks to the Benetech GCA certification, Goose Lane Editions
has ensured that it can continue to do its part to make reading accessible for millions of
Canadians.
Benetech is a nonprofit company empowering communities with software for social good. It
issues this accreditation to those publishers who produce ePubs that meet the full range of
accessibility features required to support the needs of all readers, including those with
disabilities and learning differences.

“All digital content can — and should — be born accessible. Readers can now
select Goose Lane Editions’ Global Certified Accessible eBooks trusting that
they are fully accessible.”

— Brad Turner, Bentech V.P. and General Manager of Global Education and Literacy
