Best Poetry of 2021

Here is the third and final category of 2021 to be recognized: Poetry. The seven selections below, as with our Best Fiction and Best Non-Fiction lists, were chosen by our team of contributors.

The following list is in no particular order.

Gold Pours by Aurore Gatwenzi (Latitude 46)

“Aurore Gatwenzi’s first collection, Gold Pours, is a stunning book of poetry. The language is accessible, the images mesmerizing, and the tone is always warm and introspective.” (Rachel Fernandes)

Phantompains by Therese Estacion (Book*Hug Press)

“This collection blew me away.” (Emma Rhodes)

The Blue Dragonfly – Healing Through Poetry by Veronica Eley (Hidden Brook Press)

“Read The Blue Dragonfly – healing through poetry by Veronica Eley. Be reminded of the undertow that pulls us all down or back into secret caverns of the mind, even without the extra burden of trauma.” (Contributed review)

The Essential Elizabeth Brewster as selected by Ingrid Ruthig (Porcupine’s Quill)

“I’m glad to have learned more about Elizabeth Brewster and her work through this collection chosen by Ruthig. Her poetry is lovely, and by shining this light on her with this volume, hopefully, Brewster will at least posthumously be given the attention and study she deserves.” (Alison Manley)

Undoing Hours by Selina Boan (Nightwood Editions)

“Boan’s Undoing Hours is a breathtaking exploration of the various ways in which our histories can hurt and heal us.” (Zoe Shaw)

The Whole Singing Ocean by Jessica Moore (Nightwood Editions)

The Whole Singing Ocean is an evocative and challenging read.” (Patricia Sandberg)

The Shadow List by Jen Sookfong Lee (Buckrider Books)

“These poems burn deep into your sinews so they become part of you. They go where you go. Now read this book!” (Chris Banks)
