It’s Not Just Ticks It’s Not Just Lyme by Charles Benjamin Boucher, MD

As the subtitle states, this book is filled with “Pertinent insights into the origin, recognition and treatment of Lyme and related infections”. Covering a lot of research, time and testing to provide the reader with more insight as to cases that were misdiagnosed, overlooked and treated ineffectively. It is clear from reading this small book that Dr. Boucher has done his research and learned firsthand the effects of oversight and jumping to conclusions.

Being in the Maritimes, our population is no stranger to the risk of deer and dog ticks. The tiny creature with a big bite and long-term effects if not handled properly. In August 2021, The Miramichi Reader reviewed a book titled Lyme Disease in Canada (https://miramichireader.ca/2021/08/lyme-disease-in-canada/) and this book takes the topic much further, delving into Cat Scratch Disease (Bartonella) and the Canadian House of Commons standing committee on health.

This book is much more than a viewpoint on infections and ailments, in both animals and people. It’s a backed-up statement of interest for anyone in the medical field, hikers, parents, and pet owners as it advocates for an improved healthcare system and overall research regimen for suffering patients.

Dr. Boucher is a retired Canadian physician who practiced in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia and has done his community many favours in devoting his life to shedding light on solutions, recognition and assisting the patients in his office and beyond.

A small portion of a much bigger story, this book is a quick but impactful and long-lasting read.
