The Laundromat Cat by Carole Giangrande

The Laundromat Cat by Carole Giangrande is a tale of two classic unlikely friends – a cat and a mouse. Sudsy the cat is allowed to live at the laundromat under one condition – she must catch a pesky little mouse who has been frightening the customers. When the two finally come face to face in a harrowing situation, Sudsy has a change of heart and decides to help the mouse to safety rather than catch it. Together, they manage to escape the washing machine fiasco and the two very quickly become friends. Even without words, their bond is apparent to the laundromat owner who then decides to allow Whiskers the mouse to stay. Sudsy and Whiskers become the highlight of the town, with customers stopping in specifically to visit the iconic duo.

Demonstrating examples of empathy, compassion, and unexpected friendship, The Laundromat Cat is an entertaining and educational story for young children. The illustrations by Yue Huang pair well in telling the story, and there is also a fun addition to the story which is a “find the mouse” maze that was thoroughly enjoyed.

In Adeline’s (age 4) words “I like Sudsy’s green eyes and that she saved the little mouse!”.

Note: Adeline’s sister Harlow (age 2) is pictured holding the book above.

She’s worked as a broadcast journalist for CBC Radio, and her fiction, poetry, articles and reviews have appeared in literary journals and in Canada’s major newspapers.
