Shouldering Hope, a Poem by Vin Maskell

Shouldering hope

For some
it comes naturally.
A gift
you could say.
Part of their demeanour
their philosophy
their DNA.
Bringing hope
in any small way
to family, friends,
patients, clients,
students, strangers…

For others
it is harder to maintain
the vigil of optimism.
Not always
in their disposition.
But it comes with
the territory of living
often but not every day
with the rising
of suns and stars and moons
of buds and blooms.

The warmer weather helps.
A ray that shines
A breeze that’s kind
A shoulder that’s bare
Hope invisible
in the summer air.
