I received this memoir a few days before its release date, and I will disclose, I am a Rush fan. I’m not a super fan but I have seen them in concert and enjoy listening to their music. To note this isn’t a Rush band tell-all book.
As it’s the Canadian rocker Geddy Lee’s memoir, My Effin’ Life, it does have its share of Rush lore. Some of the most memorable parts of the singer and bassist’s book are about survival, the importance of family, and his down-to-earth attitude.
Lee — born Gershon Eliezer Weinrib — was a “shy, long-haired, brooding character” who grew up in Toronto, born to parents who survived the Holocaust. This is not something he writes about lightly. Lee is a meticulously examination of the horrific paths his parents took into hell, a 40-page indictment of Nazi evil that starts in Poland and ends with his mom rescued at Bergen-Belsen and dad from Dachau. Lee is laser-focused on details throughout this Chapter.
Lee married the love of his life Nancy Young in 1976, they have a son and a daughter. Now a grandfather “I could feel the clock ticking,” Lee said. “I needed to get it down and I needed to get it right. For my kids and for my grandchildren and their children, so there would be an accurate record of how lucky we are to be here on the planet.” Lee surely got it right and I’m glad he took the time and hard work to let us explore his family’s history in his very well written memoir.
One thing to be aware of is Lee’s modesty like the time he casually mentions that he became “besotted” by baseball. He has a massive collection of baseball memorabilia, including balls signed by the Beatles and Shoeless Joe Jackson. A regular at the Toronto Blue Jays home games, Lee even uses a scoresheet to track all the game stats, I’ve seen him there myself!
Do yourself a favour and go read My Effin’ Life, I promise it’s Effin’ worth it.
