Throwback: I have Anxiety by Angela Samson

Follow Angela as she navigates Anxiety Disorder. From being diagnosed at the doctors, to learning to manage her symptoms through the help from her family and friends. Angela knows that once she learns to manage her Anxiety Disorder, she can do anything.

Angela has very big feelings, sometimes they would make her feel sad, overwhelmed, mad, or extra worried or scared. Sometimes these big feelings would make her feel sick. Then she was diagnosed with Anxiety Disorder and referred to a special doctor called a Psychologist who helps her with her disorder. We learn that she processes feelings and situations differently than others do.

“There’s things I can do to help control my Anxiety Disorder and not let it control me.”

I have Anxiety by Angela Samson is a wonderful picture book that can be a useful tool in helping to understand Anxiety Disorder better. It is perfect for children and parents of children who struggle with anxiety disorder. The book offers some methods of managing anxiety and coping tools such as deep breathing, grounding yourself with your senses, and doing things that help you feel better. Helpful activities include taking a walk with your parents, colouring, and talking about your feelings. I liked the concept of a “worry bag”. A “worry bag” contains various items or tools to help you feel better, such as a soft stuffed animal and a book. Anxiety affects people of all ages. The feelings and symptoms are real and can manifest differently for everyone. So, each person’s “worry bag” would contain different things depending on what is helpful to them.

Reading books like I have Anxiety may help to normalize anxiety. Everyone has anxiety to different degrees. It’s when it interferes with your life that it becomes a problem. I have Anxiety may also enlighten children who don’t have difficulties with anxiety. It describes the signs and symptoms that their friends or peers might be experiencing with anxiety. This may help to explain that their “normal” might be different.

“Anxiety can feel very big sometimes, but the love of my family and friends is bigger.”

Illustrated by Lubna Almousa, I have Anxiety has beautiful, bright, and colourful pages that match the subject matter on each page perfectly.
