TMR’s Best Books of 2024: Young People’s Literature

It’s that time of the year! I asked our whole team what their favourite books of the year were and received back more than 50 titles!!! Here are some of the standouts, and what our excellent reviewers had to say about them:

How to Kidnap a Mermaid by Andy Tolson

“Tolson has created a remarkable fantastical world with the perfect balance of adventure, heroics, and mythics — with some life lessons thrown into the mix. I can’t wait to read more of Tiny’s quests and hero journeys.” — Sue Slade

The Book Witch, The Wee White Dog, and the Little Free Library by Lana Shupe, illustrated my Tegan Thomas

Girl Takes Drastic Step! by Jillian Dobson and illustrated by Genevieve Simms

“An inspiring tale of perseverance and daring, showing just what women did and showed themselves capable of doing during World War II. Canada’s first official woman war artist had an important role documenting the women in Canada’s services, and she was the first woman artist to be sent overseas to do it.” — Christina Barber

Walking Trees by Marie-Louise Gay

Bertie Stewart is Perfectly Imperfect by Melanie Mosher

Butter Tart Island by Hope Dalvay

Butter Tart Island is set during the dreadful winter of 2015 when several historic snowstorms hit the Maritimes hard, causing school cancellations, record amounts of snow, and power outages. I wish there had been local books as fun to read as this one was when I was a middle-grader. The perfect #Stormbook to read this winter.” — Sue Slade
