Two Stories by Lori Doody

Agnes’s Garden

Immediately I was struck by the colour of this book. The bright variety of reds and yellows made me smile, along with the colour in the title itself!

This delightful story of a community misunderstanding the importance of vegetables is quirky, fun and vibrant. Agnes doesn’t fit in because of her focus on gardening instead of a desire for meat.

I found this very Newfoundland-esque and I loved that about all of it, including the vegetarian recipes included at the end. When the town finds itself in a pickle, Agnes’s mighty cucumbers come to rescue when Captain Brisket invades.

I can see this book being a favourite for parents who want to encourage a more vegetarian diet. A great addition to any school classroom and library!

The Pup

Many young children dream of making their lives more exciting with the adoption of a pet, and Jenny is one of them. With permission from her parents, she goes on a life-changing walk to find the pet that is right for her. On her way, she find’s one — a pup, just not your ordinary pup.

The colour and message, the look at Newfoundland and its interesting views, is like a love letter to the community. A very sweet story of the main character finding a friend in unexpected places and ways makes for a delightful read that will have children smiling and laughing.

Complete with facts about the other type of pups, Lori Doody, both writer and illustrator, makes for a delightful book that can be cherished for many years.
