The Dollhouse by Charis Cotter

When Alice and her mother arrived at the Blackwood House, she could have never guessed the adventure that awaited her. The Dollhouse, by Charis Cotter, is simply an amazing read! After seeing the book’s description, I knew I had to read it, and it didn’t disappoint. There was never a dull moment while reading The Dollhouse and I found it very hard to put down.

“There was never a dull moment while reading The Dollhouse and I found it very hard to put down.”

Alice’s summer was not going how she planned. Her parents are getting a divorce and she is no longer going on vacation. Instead, Alice and her mother are heading to a small town, where her mother has taken a job as a live-in nurse to a rich elderly lady, Mrs. Bishop. On the way there, the train had a small crash and Alice hit her head. She finds a dollhouse that’s an exact replica of the house in the attic. Inside is a family of dolls and when Alice wakes up to one of them alive and in her bed, she realizes she is going between the dollhouse and the real house. Alice tries to tell someone, but they don’t believe her and just think she got a small concussion from the accident and she’s imagining it. There is something going on at the Blackwood House and Alice is determined to figure out what.

During her summer at the Blackwood House Alice met so many new people, including Lily, Mary, Mrs. Bishop and Dr. West. She also met people in the dollhouse, like Bubble and Fizz. So much happens to Alice and she feels so many emotions that really come through to the reader. While reading it was almost like I was there alongside Alice and could feel the intensity as well as the happiness.

Charis Cotter is a phenomenal writer of tons of ghost stories. She resides in Newfoundland, Canada. Cotter says that “… the landscape and a plentiful supply of ghosts inspire my work.” After reading The Dollhouse, I would really like to read more of her work. The manner in which she writes is captivating and engaging. Cotter is truly an exceptional storyteller.

This story has a crazy plot twist and I’d recommend The Dollhouse to people aged 8-12. There are 59 short chapters and it’s also divided into parts! This is great if you’re like me and don’t like to stop in the middle of a chapter. If you are interested in ghost stories and/or mysteries, check out this book!
