The Real Me and The Real You by Morgan Jessome

Nova Scotia author Morgan Jessome’s debut young adult, The Real Me and the Real You is a charming coming-of-age romance.

Otto Harrington is the son of a famous film director and actress mother, captain of the football team, with his own personal trainer. He lives a rich and privileged life with zero goals beyond high school.

Gabby Rojas, immigrated to the USA from Venezuela, with her mother and grandparents seeking a better life. She works at the local diner and studies hard to get the grades to get into Columbia; her dream is to become a cardiologist.

They are two people from very different backgrounds, from two different worlds.

They are then paired together for a project for their psychology class. Each is required to write and present a biography about the other, getting to know each other: “The Real Me and the Real You”. Gabby hates Otto and his posse of jocks, and goes so far as calling him a jerk, but in order to do this project worth 20% of their grade they must try to get along. As time goes by they discover things about each other that make them realize all is not as they originally thought, and feelings start to develop.

This is a sweet romance that accurately depicts the challenges and stresses of high school and the cliques that divide the students. It captures the feelings of young love, early romance, and of self-discovery.
