Lost & Found in Lunenburg by Jane Doucet

Lost & Found in Lunenburg is a wonderful addition and tie-in to the previous work of Jane Doucet, Nova Scotian author of The Pregnant Pause and Fishnets & Fantasies. We first meet Rose in The Pregnant Pause and she comes back to star in Lost & Found. Doucet writes Lost & Found in a way that makes it a standalone book, briefly touching on important factors of the previous stories without being daunting to the reader who has read all three. The moments of clarity simply complement the story and help define the reasons decisions are made.

Following the life of Rose after the sudden loss of a loved one, this part of her story highlights the importance of friendship, creating bonds and taking chances. Feeling lost professionally and personally, Rose takes a trip an hour away to Lunenburg to reconnect with a friend, the owner of Fishnets & Fantasies and faces an offer she outright refuses, for a minute or two.

This novel is filled with sweet, sentimental moments partnered with laugh-out-loud situations that are equally relatable and cringe-worthy. Without spoiling it, the call about the ointment had me in stitches while the rest of the story had my heart in knots and my cheeks hurting from smiling.

The only thing missing for me, and it’s minor and hopefully brought up in a fourth book, is one final moment of letting go. It’s likely just me, and doesn’t take away from the story at all, in fact, it might add to it as the question lingers on. I’ll leave it at that.

I loved the way the author tied in some new characters with familiar ones and gently coaxed me through the past, and present and nudged me into the future. With it being a few months and several books ago, I was concerned I wouldn’t remember the connections yet Doucet seemed to understand that, somehow taking my hand and reminding me of the brilliance of the past special moments.

And I have to mention, the local flair and Nova Scotia pride throughout worked to shine a light on small communities in Nova Scotia that will reach further than our Canadian borders with its characters!
