With the ending there sparks many beginnings and Runa’s death was a prime example of this. In Rhonda Bulmer’s The Widow & The Will, the first book published through New Brunswick’s Merlin Star Press, we get to know Lindy through her family, fears, and feeble attempts at love.
Bulmer’s term “darkly-ethereal,” about a woman at the funeral and following Lindy back to the
reception, haunts the storyline while adding to its allure. With a harmony of faith, miracles and
serious characters that bring the reader, and the story’s characters down to earth, we can’t
help but look to the widow’s watch for guidance.

Runa’s will leaves everything to her granddaughter Lindy who expects it to be straightforward and already basically sorted. She wasn’t expecting, after the confirmation that Runa’s house was sold, the gift of a second property in New Brunswick. Leaving her straight-forward dictated fast-paced city life in Ontario, the possibilities of a new life of fish dinners, hiking trails and new beginnings seemed quite promising. The journey, the arrival, and what ensues was anything but straight-forward.
Whispers from a ghost, upgrades, and employees included, Lindy often wonders if her grandmother cursed her with the task or if it actually was a blessing. Determined to see it for what it was worth, Lindy rejuvenates the intrigue and clientele by hosting a contest many of her new friends take part in.
“Since you are a seeker of profound experiences and an explorer of the unknown, we invite you to record yourself in the attic overnight and judge for yourself if the stories are true.”
There are many absolute layers of haunt throughout this well written, fast-paced, romantic ghost story. Complete with drama, angst and forgiveness, The Widow and The Will is much more than Lindy’s story, it is the story of a village and a city and the journey between. With many well-written characters, including The Vaughn Manor Inn, Bulmer creates a world the reader would either crave visiting or run from, depending on their own belief in ghosts and possibilities.
